Fort Hare

Fort Hare, officially the University of Fort Hare (UFH), is a public university in Alice, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Founded in 1916, it played a significant role in the history of South Africa as a leading institution of higher education for black Africans during the apartheid era.

History: Fort Hare emerged from the South African Native College, established to provide tertiary education for black students who were denied access to other universities in the country. The institution was initially affiliated with Rhodes University College. Over time, it evolved into a fully-fledged university.

Significance: Fort Hare became a center of intellectual and political thought, producing many leaders who were instrumental in the struggle against apartheid. Notable alumni include Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, Robert Sobukwe, Govan Mbeki, Mangosuthu Buthelezi, and Kenneth Kaunda.
