Flores Island (British Columbia)
Flores Island is a sizable island located in Clayoquot Sound, on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. It is part of the traditional territory of the Ahousaht First Nation, one of the largest Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) tribes.
The island is known for its rugged coastline, rainforest environment, and abundant wildlife, including whales, sea otters, bears, and eagles. Hiking and kayaking are popular activities. The Wild Side Trail, maintained by the Ahousaht, provides a marked route through the forest and along the beaches of the island’s western coast.
Access to Flores Island is primarily by boat or float plane from Tofino, a nearby town on Vancouver Island. Ahousaht is the main settlement on the island, located on its eastern side.
Logging has been a significant industry in the region, but tourism is becoming increasingly important to the local economy. Sustainable tourism practices are being promoted in recognition of the ecological sensitivity of the area.
