Fermilab

Fermilab, officially known as the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, is a United States Department of Energy national laboratory specializing in high-energy particle physics. It is located in Batavia, Illinois, near Chicago.

Established in 1967, Fermilab is named in honor of Enrico Fermi, the Nobel Prize-winning physicist who made significant contributions to the development of nuclear physics and the Manhattan Project.

Fermilab's primary mission is to conduct research in particle physics, exploring the fundamental constituents of matter and the forces that govern their interactions. This is primarily achieved through the design, construction, and operation of large particle accelerators and detectors.

Key facilities at Fermilab include the Tevatron (retired), formerly the world's highest-energy particle collider, and the currently operating Muon g-2 experiment and the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE).

Fermilab is a user facility, meaning that it provides resources and infrastructure for scientists from around the world to conduct their research. Hundreds of universities and institutions collaborate on experiments at Fermilab.

Beyond its research activities, Fermilab is also actively involved in education and outreach, providing opportunities for students and the public to learn about particle physics and related fields. The laboratory also contributes to technological advancements in areas such as computing, detector technology, and accelerator physics, which can have broader applications beyond scientific research.
