EuroRAP
EuroRAP, also known as the European Road Assessment Programme, is a non-profit association dedicated to improving road safety through systematic assessment and risk mapping. It provides a consistent and transparent method for evaluating the safety of roads across Europe.
The core of EuroRAP's methodology involves conducting detailed surveys of road infrastructure, traffic volumes, and crash data. This information is then used to generate risk maps that highlight sections of roads with high crash rates and identify contributing factors such as poor road design, inadequate signage, and hazardous roadside features.
EuroRAP's main activities include:
- Road assessment: Performing standardized surveys to assess the safety performance of roads.
- Risk mapping: Producing maps that visually represent the risk of crashes on different road sections.
- Star ratings: Assigning star ratings (from one to five stars) to roads based on their safety performance, providing a readily understandable measure of safety.
- Advocacy and awareness: Promoting the adoption of safer road design and management practices among road authorities and policymakers.
- Research and development: Continuously refining assessment methodologies and developing new tools for improving road safety.
The ultimate goal of EuroRAP is to reduce the number of road crashes and fatalities by providing evidence-based information to guide road safety improvements and inform investment decisions. The program has influenced road safety policies and practices across Europe and has been a model for similar initiatives in other regions of the world. It partners with road authorities, automobile associations, research institutions, and other stakeholders to achieve its objectives.
