Elkford
Elkford is a district municipality located in southeastern British Columbia, Canada, within the Regional District of East Kootenay. Situated in the Elk River Valley, it is known for its proximity to significant coal mining operations and its access to outdoor recreational activities.
The community's economy is largely based on the coal mining industry, with several large surface mines operating in the surrounding area. Elkford provides residential and service support for the workers in these mines.
Elkford is located approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) north of Sparwood and approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) southeast of Elk Lakes Provincial Park. Its geographical location makes it a hub for outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, hunting, skiing, and snowmobiling. The Elk River, a major river known for fly fishing, flows nearby.
The municipality offers various amenities and services including schools, healthcare facilities, recreational facilities, and retail businesses. The population of Elkford is relatively small, reflecting its dependence on a single industry. Its demographic composition is primarily working-age individuals and families employed in the mining sector.
Elkford was officially incorporated as a municipality in 1971, established to support the growing population attracted by the expanding coal mining industry in the region. The name "Elkford" derives from the nearby Elk River and a historical ford crossing it.
