Elasmias
Elasmias is a genus of air-breathing land snails, terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusks in the family Achatinellidae. These snails are endemic to Hawaii. They are small, arboreal snails characterized by their elongated shells and operculum.
Elasmias snails are often found on native Hawaiian plants and are an important part of the island ecosystem. They feed on fungi and algae growing on the surfaces of leaves and bark.
Like many native Hawaiian snail species, Elasmias are threatened by habitat loss, invasive species (particularly predatory snails and rats), and climate change. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect these unique snails and their habitats. Research continues to better understand their biology and ecological roles.
