El Shaddai (movement)
El Shaddai is a Catholic Charismatic Renewal movement originating in the Philippines. It is one of the largest Catholic charismatic movements in Asia, claiming millions of members both within the Philippines and in Filipino diaspora communities worldwide. The name "El Shaddai" is one of the names of God in the Hebrew Bible, often translated as "God Almighty" or "God All-Sufficient."
The movement focuses on prayer, praise, and worship, with an emphasis on divine healing and prosperity theology. Weekly gatherings, often large-scale prayer rallies, are a central aspect of El Shaddai's activities. These rallies typically feature charismatic preaching, lively music, testimonies, and opportunities for individual prayer.
El Shaddai was founded by Mariano "Mike" Velarde, a Filipino businessman and lay preacher. He is widely recognized as the overall Servant Leader of the movement.
While El Shaddai operates within the Catholic Church and adheres to its core doctrines, it also incorporates elements of charismatic spirituality, such as belief in spiritual gifts like prophecy, healing, and speaking in tongues. The movement actively participates in evangelization and social outreach programs.
El Shaddai has faced some criticism regarding its emphasis on prosperity theology and its political endorsements during Philippine elections. Despite these criticisms, it remains a significant religious and social force in the Philippines.
