Dewangiri

Dewangiri is a historical and, in some contexts, still used name for present-day Samdrup Jongkhar, one of the 20 dzongkhags (districts) of Bhutan. The name "Dewangiri" often refers to the region surrounding the main town and the broader historical administrative area prior to the modern political restructuring of Bhutan. It's geographically located in southeastern Bhutan, bordering the Indian state of Assam.

Historically, Dewangiri held strategic importance due to its location on the trade routes between Bhutan and India. It served as a significant point of contact and exchange between the two regions. The area has witnessed various historical events and political shifts that shaped the modern-day Bhutanese state.

While the official administrative name is now Samdrup Jongkhar, the term Dewangiri may still be encountered in historical texts, local narratives, and some contemporary discussions referencing the region's past or its cultural identity. It evokes a sense of history and continuity for some residents and those familiar with the area's heritage.
