David Pye (zoologist)

David Pye (born in 1914, died in 1993) was a British zoologist known primarily for his contributions to the field of insect communication, particularly his work on the sounds produced by insects. He specialized in bioacoustics and biomechanics, studying the mechanisms and purposes of insect sound production and reception.

Pye held a position at Queen Mary College, University of London, where he conducted much of his research. He was a pioneer in using advanced acoustic techniques to analyze the complex sounds generated by insects. His research covered a broad range of insect species, examining the diverse ways they use sound for communication, mate attraction, and defense.

Pye’s research significantly advanced the understanding of insect auditory systems and the evolution of acoustic communication in the insect world. He published extensively on his findings, contributing significantly to the scientific literature on insect bioacoustics. His work remains relevant to researchers studying insect behavior, sensory biology, and evolutionary biology.
