Cynwyd station (SEPTA)
Cynwyd station is a former train station located in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania, on the SEPTA Regional Rail Cynwyd Line. The station served as the terminus of the Cynwyd Line, providing passenger rail service to Center City Philadelphia via a connection to the Manayunk/Norristown Line at Ivy Ridge station.
The station was originally built by the Pennsylvania Railroad. Passenger service on the Cynwyd Line, and consequently to Cynwyd station, was suspended by SEPTA in 1986 due to low ridership and structural issues with the line's infrastructure, particularly the Manayunk Bridge.
The station building itself remains standing, though it is no longer used for railway purposes. The tracks beyond the station have been converted into the Cynwyd Heritage Trail, a recreational trail popular with cyclists, walkers, and runners. The trail provides access to various points of interest along the former rail corridor. While there have been discussions and feasibility studies regarding the potential reinstatement of rail service to Cynwyd, no concrete plans for restoration have been implemented as of late 2023. The current status of the station is that of a historic structure located along a multi-use recreational trail.
