Crossfire (Eclipse Comics)
Crossfire was a superhero comic book series published by Eclipse Comics, created by Mark Evanier and Dan Spiegle. The series debuted in 1984 and ran for 28 issues, concluding in 1988.
The main character, Crossfire (real name: Catseye), is a young woman named Claire Connell, who gains superhuman agility, reflexes, and fighting skills after being exposed to experimental technology. She uses these abilities to fight crime, often encountering a diverse cast of supporting characters and villains.
The series was notable for its character-driven stories, focusing on Claire's personal struggles and moral dilemmas as she navigates her life as a superhero. Unlike many superhero comics of the time, Crossfire often explored themes of social justice, political corruption, and the responsibilities that come with power. The artwork, primarily by Dan Spiegle, featured a clean, classic style that was consistent throughout the series' run.
Crossfire occupied a specific niche within the independent comic book scene of the 1980s, offering a grounded take on the superhero genre with a focus on realistic character development and social commentary. Its run ended with the demise of Eclipse Comics, but it has maintained a cult following among fans of independent and alternative comics.
