Clam pie
Clam pie is a savory pie traditionally featuring clams as its primary ingredient. Recipes for clam pie vary regionally and across generations, but generally involve a pastry crust, a filling containing clams (typically minced or chopped), and often a creamy sauce or broth base. Additional ingredients frequently include potatoes, onions, celery, bacon or salt pork, herbs like thyme or parsley, and seasonings such as salt and pepper. Some variations may incorporate milk, cream, or butter to enrich the flavor and texture of the filling.
Clam pie is considered a comfort food, particularly in coastal regions where clams are readily available. Its history is interwoven with that of maritime communities and the resourceful use of local ingredients. Historically, clam pie would have provided a substantial and relatively inexpensive meal for families.
Preparation methods also differ. Some recipes call for pre-cooking the clams before incorporating them into the pie, while others cook them directly within the pie during baking. The crust can be either a single crust on top or a double crust encasing the entire filling.
