Charmoise

The Charmoise is a breed of domestic sheep originating from France. It was developed in the early 19th century in the Charmoise region of Lorraine, from which it takes its name. The breed is known for its moderate size, prolificacy, and adaptability to different environments.

Characteristics: Charmoise sheep are typically white-faced with wool covering most of their body. They are medium-wool sheep, producing fleeces of moderate quality and yield. Rams typically weigh between 70-90 kg, while ewes weigh between 50-70 kg. Ewes are known for their high lambing rate, often producing twins or triplets.

Purpose: The Charmoise is primarily raised for meat production. Their carcasses are well-muscled and produce lean meat. They are also valued for their ability to thrive on pasture and their relatively low maintenance requirements.

Distribution: While originating in France, the Charmoise breed has been exported to other countries, including parts of Europe and South America. It is often used in crossbreeding programs to improve the meat production and prolificacy of other sheep breeds.
