Charmakar

The Charmakar are a Hindu caste traditionally associated with leatherworking in India. The term encompasses various sub-castes and regional groups that historically practiced tanning, leather crafting, and shoemaking. Their social status has traditionally been low within the Hindu caste hierarchy, and they have faced significant social discrimination and economic hardship.

The occupation of leatherworking has often been considered ritually polluting in Hindu society, contributing to the social stigma associated with the Charmakar caste. While leather is widely used, those who work directly with animal hides were often relegated to the lowest rungs of the social order.

Historically, Charmakars were often landless laborers and artisans, reliant on the demand for leather goods within their local communities. They crafted a variety of items, including shoes, bags, belts, and agricultural implements.

In modern India, the Charmakar community is striving for social and economic upliftment. Many individuals and organizations are working to improve their educational opportunities, economic prospects, and social standing. Some have moved away from traditional occupations, seeking employment in other sectors. Government initiatives and affirmative action policies have also aimed to address historical injustices and promote greater equality for the Charmakar community. The term itself may be considered derogatory by some, and alternative terms may be preferred within the community.
