Chaca (fish)

Chaca is a genus of catfishes belonging to the family Chacidae, commonly known as frogmouth catfishes or squarehead catfishes. They are native to freshwater habitats in South and Southeast Asia.

Description:

Chaca species are characterized by their flattened, broad heads and bodies, giving them a frog-like appearance. Their mouths are wide and terminal, and their eyes are small and located on the top of their heads. They possess barbels around their mouths, which are used for sensing prey in murky waters. Their skin is rough and often covered in tubercles or small bumps. They are typically dark brown or black in color, providing camouflage in their natural environments. Chaca species are ambush predators, lying motionless on the substrate and waiting for prey to approach.

Distribution and Habitat:

Chaca catfishes are found in various freshwater ecosystems, including rivers, streams, swamps, and ponds, across South and Southeast Asia. Their range extends from India and Bangladesh eastward to Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. They prefer slow-moving, heavily vegetated waters with muddy or sandy bottoms.

Species:

The genus Chaca contains several recognized species, including:

  • Chaca bankanensis
  • Chaca chaca
  • Chaca serica

Aquarium Trade:

Chaca species, particularly Chaca chaca, are sometimes kept as ornamental fish in aquariums. They are generally considered peaceful towards other fish of similar size, but their predatory nature means they may consume smaller tankmates. They require a well-established aquarium with plenty of hiding places and subdued lighting. Due to their cryptic behavior, they may not be frequently seen.

Conservation Status:

The conservation status of individual Chaca species varies. Further research is needed to assess the population sizes and threats to these species.
