Cabin Fever (2002 film)

Cabin Fever is a 2002 American horror film written and directed by Eli Roth. It stars Rider Strong, Jordan Ladd, Cerina Vincent, Joey Kern, and James DeBello as a group of college graduates who rent a remote cabin in the woods for a vacation. Their idyllic getaway turns into a nightmare when they contract a flesh-eating virus.

The film is noted for its graphic violence, dark humor, and exploration of themes such as paranoia, social responsibility, and the fear of the unknown. Cabin Fever was Roth's directorial debut and gained notoriety for its independent production and its initial release as an unrated film.

The plot centers around the rapid spread of the virus among the group, leading to escalating panic, distrust, and ultimately, death. As the infection worsens, the friends turn on each other, revealing their true natures under extreme duress. The local community also becomes involved, exhibiting varying degrees of fear and prejudice towards the infected.

Cabin Fever received mixed reviews upon release, with some critics praising its originality and homage to classic horror films, while others criticized its excessive gore and perceived lack of depth. Despite the divided critical response, the film was a commercial success, grossing over $30 million worldwide on a small budget.

The film spawned a sequel, Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever (2009), directed by Ti West, and a remake, Cabin Fever (2016), directed by Travis Zariwny. None of the original cast returned for these subsequent films. The Cabin Fever franchise also includes a prequel, Cabin Fever: Patient Zero (2014), directed by Kaare Andrews.
