Cártama

Cártama is a town and municipality in the province of Málaga, part of the autonomous community of Andalusia, southern Spain. It is situated in the Guadalhorce Valley, approximately 17 kilometers inland from the city of Málaga.

Historically, Cártama has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with evidence of Phoenician, Roman, and Arab settlements. The town's name is believed to derive from the Roman name Cartima. The remains of a Roman forum and theater can still be seen today.

During the Moorish period, Cártama was an important agricultural center. Following the Reconquista, the town came under Christian rule.

Today, Cártama's economy is based primarily on agriculture, with citrus fruits, olives, and cereals being important crops. Tourism is also a growing sector. The municipality is known for its traditional architecture, particularly its whitewashed houses and narrow streets. Cártama is comprised of a town center and a number of more modern residential areas, reflecting its growth in recent decades.
