Buddy Burner

A buddy burner is a simple, improvised cooking stove typically made from a metal can, cardboard, and wax (usually paraffin wax). It is a popular choice for outdoor activities like camping, hiking, and emergency preparedness because it is lightweight, easy to construct from readily available materials, and provides a relatively clean and efficient heat source.

Construction:

The most common method of creating a buddy burner involves rolling corrugated cardboard strips tightly and inserting them into a metal can, such as a paint can or coffee can. Melted wax is then poured over the cardboard, saturating it completely. Once the wax cools and solidifies, the cardboard wicks act as fuel, allowing the burner to be lit and sustained for a considerable duration.

Advantages:

  • Simplicity: Buddy burners are easy to construct with minimal tools and readily available materials.
  • Low Cost: The materials required are inexpensive, often recycled, making it a budget-friendly option.
  • Portability: Due to their lightweight nature, buddy burners are easily transportable for outdoor activities.
  • Sustainability: Utilizing recycled materials makes buddy burners a more sustainable alternative to disposable fuel canisters.
  • Reliability: They are relatively resistant to wind and provide a stable, consistent flame.
  • Longevity: A well-made buddy burner can burn for several hours depending on its size and construction.

Disadvantages:

  • Wax Spillage Risk: Melting wax can be hazardous if not handled carefully. Spilled wax is flammable and can cause burns.
  • Smoke: While burning, buddy burners can produce smoke, especially during the initial lighting or if the wax is not pure.
  • Residue: After burning, a buddy burner leaves behind wax residue, which can be messy to dispose of.
  • Non-Adjustable Flame: The flame intensity is difficult to control once lit.
  • Ventilation: Use in enclosed spaces requires proper ventilation due to the carbon monoxide produced during combustion.

Safety Precautions:

  • Construct and use buddy burners in a well-ventilated area.
  • Exercise caution when melting wax to avoid burns or fire hazards.
  • Place the burner on a non-flammable surface away from combustible materials.
  • Never leave a burning buddy burner unattended.
  • Have a fire extinguisher or water nearby in case of emergency.
  • Allow the burner to cool completely before handling or disposing of it.
