Boticas

A botica (plural: boticas) is a Spanish term, and formerly a Tagalog and Portuguese term, referring to a pharmacy or drugstore. Historically, boticas were more than just dispensaries of medicines; they often served as community centers, offering advice and consultations on health matters. In some regions, particularly in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era, boticas were also spaces where scientific knowledge and discoveries were shared and discussed. They were important institutions in the dissemination of information about hygiene, sanitation, and disease prevention. The role of the botica has evolved with the modernization of pharmaceutical practices, but the term may still be used in some Spanish-speaking countries and the Philippines to refer to a traditional pharmacy or a pharmacy with a historical significance.
