Bernt Moe

Bernt Moe (1814-1850) was a Norwegian landscape painter. He is primarily known for his romantic depictions of Norwegian nature, particularly scenes from the mountains and fjords. Moe studied at the Royal Drawing School in Christiania (Oslo) and later in Düsseldorf, Germany, under Andreas Achenbach, a prominent figure in the Düsseldorf school of painting. His training in Düsseldorf significantly influenced his style, which incorporated dramatic lighting and idealized compositions.

Moe's paintings often feature grand vistas, rugged terrain, and small figures dwarfed by the landscape, emphasizing the power and beauty of nature. He aimed to capture the essence of the Norwegian spirit and evoke a sense of national identity through his art. Although his career was relatively short due to his early death, Moe produced a significant body of work that contributed to the development of Norwegian landscape painting in the 19th century. His works are found in several major Norwegian art museums, including the National Museum in Oslo.
