Bay Trail (Australia)

The Bay Trail is a shared-use path encircling Port Phillip Bay in Victoria, Australia. It offers a primarily off-road route for cyclists, pedestrians, and other non-motorized users, connecting various bayside suburbs and providing recreational access to the coastline.

The trail is not a single continuous path, but rather a collection of interconnected paths and sections of roadway. Consequently, its exact length is difficult to define and varies depending on the chosen route. Estimates generally range from 100km to over 130km.

The Bay Trail passes through diverse landscapes, including beaches, parks, reserves, and urban areas. Significant sections include, but are not limited to, paths along the foreshore in St Kilda, Elwood, Brighton, Sandringham, Black Rock, and Mordialloc. In some areas, the trail utilizes existing infrastructure such as the Yarra River trail extension southwards.

Efforts are continually underway to improve and extend the Bay Trail, with local councils and state government agencies contributing to its ongoing development. Signage varies along different sections, but generally aims to guide users along the route. Due to its discontinuous nature, planning a route in advance is recommended, especially for longer journeys.
