Barfi (film)
Barfi! is a 2012 Indian Hindi-language romantic comedy-drama film directed by Anurag Basu and produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur. Set in the 1970s, the film depicts the story of Murphy "Barfi" Johnson (Ranbir Kapoor), a deaf and mute young man from Darjeeling, and his relationships with two women, Shruti Ghosh (Ileana D'Cruz), who is engaged to someone else, and Jhilmil Chatterjee (Priyanka Chopra), an autistic woman.
The film explores themes of love, sacrifice, and the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities. Barfi's infectious zest for life and his unconventional methods of expressing affection form the core of the narrative. Shruti's internal conflict between societal expectations and her feelings for Barfi, and Jhilmil's vulnerability and dependence on Barfi, add layers of complexity to the story.
"Barfi!" garnered widespread critical acclaim upon its release for its heartwarming storyline, captivating performances, beautiful cinematography, and soul-stirring music composed by Pritam. The film was a major commercial success and won numerous awards, including several Filmfare Awards. It was also selected as India's official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 85th Academy Awards. However, it was not nominated. Despite the accolades, the film also faced some controversy regarding alleged plagiarism of certain scenes and musical scores.
