Bandsaw

A bandsaw is a power tool utilizing a continuous band of metal with teeth to cut various materials, most commonly wood, but also including metal, plastic, and other substances depending on the blade type. The blade is stretched between two or more wheels that rotate, drawing the blade through the material being cut.

Bandsaws are distinguished by their ability to cut curves and intricate shapes, as well as straight lines. This is due to the narrow blade width, allowing for tighter turning radii than many other types of saws.

The size of a bandsaw is typically determined by the diameter of its wheels, which dictates the maximum thickness of material that can be cut (the "throat depth" – the distance from the blade to the vertical frame). Larger bandsaws are generally used for resawing (cutting a piece of wood into thinner pieces) and handling thick stock, while smaller models are more suitable for detail work.

Key components of a bandsaw include the blade, wheels, blade guides, table, motor, and frame. Blade guides help to keep the blade aligned and prevent it from wandering during the cut. The table provides a stable surface for supporting the workpiece.

Bandsaws are used in a wide range of applications, from woodworking and metalworking to meat processing and medical procedures. They are valued for their precision, versatility, and relative safety compared to some other types of power saws. The continuous cutting action also tends to produce a smoother cut than reciprocating saws.
