Aztec Bowl (stadium)

The Aztec Bowl was a multi-purpose stadium located in San Diego, California, on the campus of San Diego State University (SDSU). It served primarily as the home field for the San Diego State Aztecs football team from 1936 until 1967.

Constructed as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project during the Great Depression, the stadium was originally named "Balboa Stadium East," due to its proximity to the larger Balboa Stadium (now demolished) in Balboa Park. It was renamed Aztec Bowl in 1936 in conjunction with SDSU adopting the "Aztecs" as its official team moniker.

The Aztec Bowl held approximately 12,500 spectators. While primarily used for football, the stadium also hosted other events, including track and field competitions and graduation ceremonies.

Following the 1967 season, the Aztecs moved their football games to the newly constructed San Diego Stadium (later known as Jack Murphy Stadium and Qualcomm Stadium, now also demolished). The Aztec Bowl remained in use for other athletic and university-related activities for several years afterward.

The stadium was eventually demolished in 1968 to make way for the construction of the SDSU library and other campus buildings. There are no remnants of the Aztec Bowl remaining on the SDSU campus.
