Anthony Hungerford (Royalist)

Anthony Hungerford (1607/8 – 1657) was an English landowner and politician who staunchly supported the Royalist cause during the English Civil War. A member of the landed gentry, Hungerford hailed from Black Bourton in Oxfordshire and often represented this constituency in Parliament.

Hungerford's unwavering loyalty to King Charles I led him to actively participate in the Royalist efforts against the Parliamentarian forces. This commitment resulted in significant consequences for him, including imprisonment and financial hardship. He was notably imprisoned in the Tower of London for his activities. The heavy fines and sequestrations levied against his estates further crippled his wealth.

Despite the risks and personal sacrifices, Hungerford remained steadfast in his support of the monarchy. He died in 1657, prior to the Restoration, having suffered greatly for his allegiance to the Royalist cause. His life exemplifies the dedication and personal costs endured by many Royalists during the tumultuous period of the English Civil War. He is remembered as a prominent figure who actively contributed to the Royalist efforts and suffered significantly for his beliefs.
