Alessandro Franchi (painter)

Alessandro Franchi (1838-1914) was an Italian painter, primarily known for his historical and religious subjects. Born in Prato, Italy, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. Franchi's artistic style is characterized by its academic realism, reflecting the prevailing artistic tastes of the late 19th century.

He executed numerous commissions for churches and public buildings, particularly in Tuscany. His works often depict scenes from the Bible and the lives of saints. Franchi also produced portraits and some genre paintings, although these are less common than his religious and historical works.

While not considered a leading figure of the Italian Macchiaioli movement, Franchi was active in the Florentine art scene during that period. He maintained a more traditional approach to painting compared to the Macchiaioli's emphasis on plein air painting and capturing fleeting impressions of light and color.
