17th Arkansas Infantry Regiment (Lemoyne's)
The 17th Arkansas Infantry Regiment (Lemoyne's) was a Confederate infantry regiment that served during the American Civil War. The regiment was formed in Arkansas in 1861 and 1862, often referred to as Lemoyne's Regiment, after its first commander, Colonel John F. Lemoyne.
The regiment saw action in numerous engagements throughout the war, primarily in the Western Theater. Specific battles and campaigns in which the 17th Arkansas Infantry Regiment (Lemoyne's) participated included (but were not limited to): the Battle of Pea Ridge, the Siege of Corinth, the Battle of Stones River (Murfreesboro), the Tullahoma Campaign, the Battle of Chickamauga, and the Atlanta Campaign.
Following the death or resignation of Colonel Lemoyne, the regiment was sometimes referred to by the names of subsequent commanders. Like many Confederate units, the 17th Arkansas suffered heavy casualties throughout the war due to combat, disease, and desertion.
After the war's conclusion in 1865, the surviving members of the 17th Arkansas Infantry Regiment (Lemoyne's) were paroled and returned to their homes. Detailed service records of individual soldiers, as well as unit histories, can be found in state and national archives.
