jimmy corcoran (footballer)

James "Jimmy" Corcoran (born 22 May 1940) is a former Irish professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Renowned for his distinguished career in the League of Ireland, he is particularly associated with Dundalk FC and Shamrock Rovers, where he achieved significant success during the 1960s and 1970s. Corcoran also earned one senior international cap for the Republic of Ireland.

Club Career

Corcoran began his senior career in the League of Ireland with Dundalk FC in the late 1950s. He was a key member of the Dundalk side that won the League of Ireland title in the 1962–63 season, ending the club's 29-year wait for the championship.

Following his initial spell at Dundalk, Corcoran moved to Shamrock Rovers in 1963. His time at Rovers was exceptionally successful, as he became an integral part of the legendary team that won six consecutive FAI Cups between 1964 and 1969. During this period, Rovers also claimed multiple League of Ireland titles and other domestic honours, establishing themselves as the dominant force in Irish football.

Corcoran returned to Dundalk for a second spell, where he continued to add to his honours. He won another League of Ireland title with Dundalk in the 1975–76 season and an FAI Cup in 1977, completing a remarkable career with his boyhood club. He also played for other League of Ireland clubs, including Sligo Rovers, Drogheda United, and Athlone Town, before retiring.

International Career

Jimmy Corcoran represented the Republic of Ireland at various levels. He played for the Republic of Ireland B team and the U-23 side. His sole senior international cap came on 5 April 1969, when he started in a friendly match against Austria.
