Zvi Hirsh Broide (Hebrew: צבי הירש ברוידא; c. 1856 – 1917) was a prominent Orthodox rabbi and one of the early leaders of the Mussar movement in Lithuania. He is primarily known for serving as the first Rosh Yeshiva (dean) of the influential Telshe Yeshiva (also spelled Telz Yeshiva) in Telšiai, Lithuania.
Biography
Born in Lithuania around 1856, Zvi Hirsh Broide began his studies under the tutelage of prominent Mussar masters. He was a close student of Rabbi Nosson Tzvi Finkel, known as the Alter of Slabodka, who was himself a leading disciple of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter, the founder of the Mussar movement. Rabbi Broide became deeply imbued with the principles of Mussar, which emphasizes ethical and moral self-improvement alongside intense Torah study. His reputation grew for both his profound scholarship and his exemplary character.
In 1873, Rabbi Broide, together with his father-in-law Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Abel, co-founded the Telshe Yeshiva in the town of Telšiai. He was appointed as its inaugural Rosh Yeshiva, a position he held until his passing. Under his leadership, the yeshiva rapidly developed into one of the most respected and innovative institutions of higher Torah learning in Eastern Europe.
Rabbi Broide was instrumental in implementing the unique methodology of the Telshe Yeshiva, which rigorously integrated the study of Mussar into the daily curriculum alongside advanced Talmudic studies.
