Zorglub

Zorglub is a fictional supervillain originating in the Franco‑Belgian comic series Spirou et Fantasio. He was created by comic author André Franquin and first appeared in the story “Le dictateur et le champignon” (“The Dictator and the Mushroom”), which was published in Spirou magazine in 1959.

Character overview
Zorglub, whose real name is Georges Labranche, is depicted as a brilliant but megalomaniacal scientific genius. He possesses a doctorate in physics and a talent for invention, which he applies to the development of advanced, often world‑dominating technologies. His most notable creation is the Zorglak force field, a defensive energy shield that renders him impervious to conventional attacks. He also employs a range of inventions such as the Zorglub mobile, a flying vehicle, and the Zorglubian ray, a device capable of mind control.

Narrative role
Initially introduced as an antagonist who seeks to conquer the world through his inventions, Zorglub undergoes a complex character arc across multiple Spirou et Fantasio albums. After several confrontations with the protagonists Spirou and Fantasio, he experiences moments of redemption and at times collaborates with the heroes against common threats. This ambivalence has made him a recurring figure in the series, embodying themes of scientific responsibility and the ethical limits of technological power.
