- Municipality of Prijepolje
- Municipality of Arilje
The economy of Zlatibor District is diversified, with tourism—particularly mountain tourism and health resorts—being a major sector, complemented by agriculture, forestry, timber processing, and limited mining activities.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Zlatibor” derives from two Serbian words: zlatno (“golden”) and bor (“pine”), reflecting the historic presence of extensive pine forests that were reputed to have a golden hue in certain lighting conditions. The district adopts this toponym due to its inclusion of the Zlatibor mountain plateau, a well‑known tourist destination.
Characteristics
- Geography: The district features a mixed relief of high mountain peaks (e.g., Tornik, 1 496 m) and river valleys. It shares borders with the districts of Moravica to the east, Raška to the south, and the neighboring country of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the west.
- Climate: A continental climate with alpine influences; cooler temperatures at higher elevations and relatively high precipitation, supporting dense forest cover.
- Demographics: The population is primarily ethnic Serb, with minorities of Bosniaks, Roma, and others. The urban centre of Užice accounts for roughly one‑third of the district’s total population.
- Economy: Tourism is centred on the Zlatibor mountain resort, health spas (e.g., “Matsik”), and national parks such as Tara. Agricultural production includes fruit orchards, especially plum and apple, as well as livestock farming. Small‑scale manufacturing and timber processing are present in the urban centres.
- Infrastructure: The district is traversed by major road corridors (e.g., State Road 21) and railway lines connecting Belgrade with the western border. The Užice Airport provides limited domestic air service. Educational institutions include the University of Užice’s Faculty of Teacher Education and several secondary schools.
