Zhong County (忠县, Zhōng Xiàn) is an administrative county of the Chongqing municipality in southwestern China.
Overview
Located in the eastern part of the Chongqing municipality, Zhong County lies on the banks of the Yangtze River and borders the provinces of Hubei and Hunan. The county covers an area of approximately 2,200 km² and, according to the latest available census data, has a population of around 500,000 residents. Zhong County is governed by a county-level People's Government under the jurisdiction of the Chongqing municipal authorities. The county’s economy is traditionally based on agriculture, with recent development focusing on tourism, hydroelectric power, and light industry.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Zhong” (忠) translates to “loyal” or “faithful” in Chinese. The designation dates to the Tang dynasty (618–907 CE) when the area was organized as a prefectural seat and later renamed to reflect imperial favor. Historical records indicate that the name was retained through successive dynastic changes and was formalized as a county-level division in the modern administrative system of the People’s Republic of China.

- Geography: The county’s terrain is a mix of low‑lying river valleys along the Yangtze and mountainous areas to the south and west. The Three Gorges Reservoir, created by the Three Gorges Dam, has inundated parts of the original riverbank, influencing local settlement patterns and infrastructure.
- Climate: Zhong County experiences a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa), with hot, rainy summers and mild, relatively dry winters. Annual precipitation averages about 1,200 mm, and the average temperature ranges from 7 °C in January to 28 °C in July.
- Economy: Agriculture remains significant, with rice, wheat, and rapeseed as primary crops. The county has developed tourism centered on the nearby Shennong Stream gorges and the historic Zhong County Ancient Town, which preserves traditional architecture. Hydropower generation from the Yangtze and associated water projects contributes to local revenue.
- Transportation: Zhong County is served by the Chongqing–Yichang railway and several provincial highways that connect it to the municipal center of Chongqing and neighboring provinces. River transport on the Yangtze remains an important conduit for bulk goods.
- Culture and Heritage: The area is home to a mix of Han Chinese and ethnic minority communities, including the Tujia and Miao peoples. Traditional festivals, local opera, and handicrafts such as bamboo weaving are part of the cultural landscape.
- Education and Health: The county administers a network of primary and secondary schools, as well as a vocational technical college. Healthcare is provided through county-level hospitals and township health centers.
