Zgornja Šiška (pronounced [ˈzɡɔːɾnja ˈʃiːʃka]) is a former village that is now part of the Šiška District in the capital city of Ljubljana, Slovenia. It lies in the northwestern part of the city, situated on the left bank of the Sava River and adjacent to the neighborhoods of Spodnja Šiška, Šiška Centr, and the suburb of Šentvid.
Geography
Zgornja Šiška occupies a hilly terrain that transitions into the flat river plain near the Sava. The area is traversed by several small streams, and its elevation is approximately 340 metres above sea level. The built environment consists primarily of residential housing, interspersed with commercial facilities and green spaces such as the nearby Tivoli Park.
History
The settlement of Zgornja Šiška was first documented in written sources in the 14th century under the German name Ober‑Schiška. Historically it was an agricultural community that formed part of the traditional region of Upper Carniola (Gorenjska). In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the proximity of Ljubljana facilitated gradual urbanisation, and the village was incorporated into the city’s municipal boundaries in 1935. Following World War II, further development led to the integration of Zgornja Šiška into the expanding urban fabric of Ljubljana.
Demographics
As a former independent settlement, Zgornja Šiška no longer has separate population statistics; its inhabitants are counted within the broader Šiška District. The district as a whole had a population of approximately 31,000 people according to the 2020 census, reflecting a mixed demographic profile typical of Ljubljana’s residential areas.
Infrastructure and Transportation
Zgornja Šiška is served by Ljubljana’s public transport network, including bus lines that connect it to the city centre and surrounding districts. The A2 motorway (Ljubljana Ring Road) runs nearby, providing road access to the national highway system. Bicycle paths and pedestrian walkways link the area with adjacent green spaces.
Cultural and Community Aspects
The neighbourhood hosts several community facilities, such as a primary school, a cultural centre, and local sports clubs. The parish church of Saint George, located in the neighboring Spodnja Šiška, historically served the religious needs of Zgornja Šiška residents.
Etymology
The Slovene name Zgornja Šiška literally means “Upper Šiška,” distinguishing it from the adjacent settlement of Spodnja Šiška (“Lower Šiška”). The root “Šiška” is believed to derive from the Slovene word šiška, meaning “cone” or “seed‑pod,” possibly referring to the shape of local terrain or to vegetation characteristic of the area. The prefix “Zgornja” reflects its higher elevation relative to Spodnja Šiška.
