Zerfas was an American psychedelic rock band from Indianapolis, Indiana, active in the early 1970s. The group was centered around brothers David Zerfas (drums, percussion, vocals) and Brian "Herman" Zerfas (keyboards, vocals), with additional members including Mark Tribby (bass, guitars, vocals) and Steve Newbold (bass, guitars).
The band originally formed in 1969 under the name Jubal, recording an album at Gilfoy Sound Studio in 1970 that remained unreleased. By 1973, the brothers were the only remaining permanent members, and when given the opportunity to record material, they renamed themselves Zerfas. They released their sole self-titled album, Zerfas, in 1973 on Moe Whittemore's 700 West record label. Only about 500 copies were pressed, making it a rare collector's item.
The album had limited commercial success at the time but found a much larger audience in the early 2000s when the track "I Need It Higher" was featured on the American edition of the Love, Peace, and Poetry psychedelic music compilation series. The album received an official deluxe reissue on LP in later years.
Mojo magazine referred to the band as "legends ... who could conceivably have made it, if only they'd received proper backing." Their sound has been described as a blend of hard rock and psychedelic rock, with production that was notably crisp and inventive for a self-released record of the era.
