Zdzisław Krygowski

Definition
Zdzisław Krygowski (1872 – 1955) was a Polish mathematician and academic administrator, noted for his contributions to mathematical education and his service as rector of the Jan Kazimierz University in Lwów (now Lviv, Ukraine).

Overview
Born on 12 September 1872 in Lublin, then part of the Russian Empire, Krygowski pursued his higher education at the Imperial University of Warsaw, where he earned his doctorate in mathematics in 1898. He subsequently held teaching positions at secondary schools before entering academia as a lecturer at the Jan Kazimierz University in 1910.

During his tenure at the university, Krygowski specialized in geometry and the theory of functions, publishing a series of textbooks and scholarly articles that were widely used in Polish secondary and tertiary education. His most influential works include Podstawy geometrii (Foundations of Geometry, 1915) and Elementy analizy matematycznej (Elements of Mathematical Analysis, 1922).

From 1925 to 1927, Krygowski served as rector of the Jan Kazimierz University, overseeing a period of significant expansion in scientific research and faculty development. He was also an active member of the Polish Mathematical Society (Polskie Towarzystwo Matematyczne) and participated in the establishment of the Polish Academy of Learning’s Mathematics Committee.

Krygowski continued teaching and publishing until his retirement in 1945. He passed away on 4 March 1955 in Lwów.
