Zack de la Rocha (born Zachary Thomas de la Rocha; January 12 1970) is an American musician, rapper, and activist best known as the vocalist and lyricist for the rock band Rage Against the Machine.
Early life and education
De la Rocha was born in Long Beach, California, to a Mexican-American mother, Yolanda (née Salazar), and a Nicaraguan father, José De la Rocha, who was a civil‑rights activist. He spent part of his childhood in the San Francisco Bay Area before moving to Los Angeles at age 12. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he earned a degree in philosophy.
Musical career

Rage Against the Machine (1991–2000, 2007–2011, 2020–present): De la Rocha co‑founded Rage Against the Machine in 1991 with guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford, and drummer Brad Wilk. The band released four studio albums: Rage Against the Machine (1992), Evil Empire (1996), The Battle of Los Angeles (1999), and Renegades (2000). Their music blends rap, punk, and heavy metal, and their lyrics address political and social issues. The group achieved multi‑platinum sales and multiple Grammy nominations.
