Zaccheus Daniel

Definition Zaccheus Daniel (1874–1964) was an American astronomer known for his work at Princeton University Observatory, his contributions to stellar spectroscopy and variable star observation, and his discovery of a comet.

Overview Born on January 1, 1874, Zaccheus Daniel pursued higher education at Princeton University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts (1905), Master of Arts (1906), and Doctor of Philosophy (1909) degrees. He spent the majority of his professional career at Princeton University Observatory, serving in various capacities including assistant astronomer, instructor, and ultimately as a professor and assistant director of the observatory until his retirement. Daniel was particularly known for his meticulous work in astrometry, specifically in determining stellar parallaxes and observing binary and variable stars using photographic techniques. His most notable discovery was Comet C/1907 L2, which is eponymously known as Comet Daniel. He passed away on December 21, 1964.

Etymology/Origin The name "Zaccheus" is of Hebrew origin (Greek: Ζακχαῖος, Zakchaios), meaning "pure" or "innocent." It is a significant biblical name, famously borne by the prophet Daniel. These names reflect common personal nomenclature and do not directly relate to his scientific field or discoveries beyond identifying him personally.
