Yves‑François Blanchet (born February 16 1965) is a Canadian politician who has served as the leader of the Bloc Québécois, a federal political party advocating for the interests of Quebec, since January 2019. Prior to entering federal politics, Blanchet held several ministerial positions in the provincial government of Quebec as a member of the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ).
Early life and education
Blanchet was born in Drummondville, Quebec. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the Université de Montréal and subsequently obtained a master's degree in public administration from the École nationale d'administration publique (ENAP) in Quebec City.
Provincial political career
Blanchet was first elected to the National Assembly of Quebec in the 2008 provincial election, representing the riding of Drummond. He was re‑elected in 2012 and 2014. During his tenure with the CAQ, he served in the cabinet of Premier François Legault as Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment, and the Fight against Climate Change (2018–2019). In this role, Blanchet oversaw policies related to environmental protection, climate action, and natural resource management within the province.
Transition to federal politics
In January 2019, Blanchet resigned from his provincial cabinet and seat to run for the leadership of the Bloc Québécois. He was acclaimed as leader on January 17 2019, succeeding Martine Ouellet. Under his leadership, the Bloc revitalized its parliamentary presence, increasing its seat count from one to ten in the 2019 federal election and further expanding in the 2021 election.

Blanchet's tenure as party leader has been marked by a focus on Quebec sovereignty, the protection of French language rights, and advocacy for Quebec’s distinct society within Canada. Personal life
Blanchet is married and has three children. He is a fluent French speaker and has been involved in various community and cultural organizations in Quebec. He continues to reside in the province.
