Yurii Viktorovych Pavlenko (Ukrainian: Юрій Вікторович Павленко; born 23 July 1960) is a Ukrainian psychologist, academic, and former politician. He held several high‑level governmental posts in Ukraine, most notably serving as Minister of Education and Science from December 2007 to March 2010.
Early life and education
Pavlenko was born in Boryspil, Kyiv Oblast, then part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. He graduated from the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv with a specialization in psychology. He later defended a doctoral dissertation in pedagogical sciences, earning the academic title of Doctor of Sciences and subsequently attaining the rank of professor.
Academic career
Following his doctoral studies, Pavlenko worked as a researcher and lecturer at Ukrainian higher‑education institutions. He has authored numerous scientific publications in the fields of psychology, education, and social sciences, and has held positions at the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine.
Political career
- State Committee on Nationalities and Religions (2002–2005): Pavlenko served as the head of this governmental body, overseeing policies related to interethnic and interreligious relations.
- Governor of Kharkiv Oblast (2005–2006): Appointed by President Viktor Yushchenko, he administered the region’s executive functions.
- Minister of Education and Science (18 December 2007 – 14 March 2010): In this cabinet role under Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, Pavlenko was responsible for the national education system, higher education reforms, and scientific policy. He oversaw initiatives aimed at aligning Ukraine’s educational standards with European norms.
After the change of government in March 2010, Pavlenko left the ministry and returned to academic work. He has not held elected office since that time.
