Yuan Humo

Yuan Humo (袁湖摩) was a military officer who served under the warlord Lü Bu during the late Eastern Han dynasty of China. He is primarily known for his role in the final stages of the Battle of Xiapi (198 CE), which led to Lü Bu's defeat and execution by Cao Cao.

Biography and Historical Context

Yuan Humo's early life and origins are not extensively documented. He appears in historical records, most notably the Records of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguozhi), as one of Lü Bu's generals. Lü Bu was a formidable but often opportunistic warlord who frequently changed allegiances, ultimately clashing with Cao Cao, one of the most powerful figures vying for control of China during the tumultuous period leading up to the Three Kingdoms era.

Role in the Battle of Xiapi

The Battle of Xiapi was a decisive conflict where Cao Cao besieged Lü Bu's stronghold in Xiapi. The siege lasted for months, during which Lü Bu's forces were gradually weakened by Cao Cao's military pressure and the Yellow River's diversion, which flooded parts of the city.

Towards the end of the siege, morale among Lü Bu's officers plummeted. In a critical turn of events, Yuan Humo, along with two other generals, Song Xian (宋憲) and Hou Cheng (侯成), betrayed Lü Bu. They captured Lü Bu's chief strategist Chen Gong (陳宮) and Lü Bu's trusted general Gao Shun (高順), and then opened the city gates to Cao Cao's army. This act directly led to the collapse of Lü Bu's defenses and his subsequent capture and execution.

Significance

Yuan Humo's defection, alongside Song Xian and Hou Cheng, represented a significant turning point in the Battle of Xiapi. Their betrayal was a key factor in Lü Bu's downfall, effectively ending his career as a warlord and consolidating Cao Cao's power in the Central Plains. After their defection, their fates are not widely recorded, suggesting they likely integrated into Cao Cao's forces or faded into obscurity after the immediate events of the battle.
