Yongsin-dong (Korean: 용신동; Hanja: 龍新洞) is an administrative dong (neighborhood) in Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul, South Korea.
Etymology The name "Yongsin" is commonly believed to be a portmanteau derived from "Yongdu-dong" (용두동) and "Sinseol-dong" (신설동), reflecting its historical proximity or formation relative to these areas. Another interpretation suggests the name combines "Yong" (龍, dragon) and "Sin" (新, new), possibly indicating a desire for prosperity or new beginnings.
Geography and Location Yongsin-dong is situated in the central-western part of Dongdaemun-gu. It is generally bordered by:
- Jeonnong-dong to the east
- Yongdu-dong to the west
- Jangan-dong to the south
- Cheongnyangni-dong to the north
The Cheonggyecheon Stream forms a significant part of its southern boundary, separating it from Jangan-dong.
History Like many neighborhoods in Seoul, Yongsin-dong's history is intertwined with the city's expansion and urbanization. The area has evolved from a more rural or agricultural landscape into a densely populated residential and commercial district. Its administrative designation as a dong within Dongdaemun-gu was part of broader urban planning and administrative reorganizations by the Seoul Metropolitan Government.
