The name “Yoncalla” derives from the Yoncalla band of the Kalapuya Native American people, who historically inhabited the region. Early Euro‑American settlement in the area began in the 1850s, and a post office was established under the name “Yoncalla” in 1864. The community was formally platted in 1871 and incorporated as a city in 1910.
