Yegor Stanislavovich Kholmogorov (Russian: Егор Станиславович Холмогоров; born 15 April 1975 in Moscow, Russian SFSR) is a Russian political commentator, journalist, documentary filmmaker, blogger, and publicist known for his nationalist viewpoints. He has been a columnist for the state‑affiliated television channel Russia‑Today (RT) and the online platform Tsargrad TV, and he hosts the literary‑cultural website “100 Books.” Kholmogorov is credited with coining the term “Russian Spring” to describe the annexation of Crimea and the subsequent conflict in the Donbas region.
Early life and education
Kholmogorov attended Moscow secondary schools No. 81 (now 1229) and No. 401, graduating in 1992 from school No. 57 with a focus on the humanities. He briefly enrolled in the history department of Moscow State University but was expelled after one year. He later entered the Russian Orthodox Institute of St. John the Theologian but did not complete a degree there. In the 1990s he worked part‑time as a junior history teacher and as a salesman in an Orthodox bookstore.
Career
- Journalism and media: Kholmogorov began publishing in the early 1990s, contributing to the newspaper Segodnya and the magazine Alpha and Omega. He served as editor‑in‑chief of the internet site “Churchfulness,” associated with the Russian Orthodox Autonomous Church, before leaving that organization in 2004. Since the mid‑2000s he has written for Izvestia, Tsargrad TV, and other outlets, and he has produced documentary films on Russian political and religious topics.
- Political activity: In 1998, together with Konstantin Krylov, he founded the nationalist website Doctrina.Ru. He ran for the Moscow City Duma in 2005 on the ticket of the Free Russia party, which failed to cross the electoral threshold. Kholmogorov has participated in meetings with Russian political figures, including a 2012 discussion with then‑Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Russian nationalism. He has been involved with the National Democratic Party of Russia and, since 2017, with the Society for the Development of Russian Historical Education “Double‑Headed Eagle.”
- Ideological contributions: Kholmogorov introduced the concept of “Russian Spring” in February 2014 to frame Russia’s actions in Crimea and the Donbas as a renewal of Russian geopolitical power. He has also promoted the notion of “Nuclear Orthodoxy,” describing nuclear weapons as a spiritual safeguard for Russia, and has used the term “Russism” to emphasize the primacy of the Russian state and Orthodox Christianity.
Controversies
Kholmogorov’s nationalist rhetoric and support for Russian military interventions have placed him on sanctions and “warmonger” lists compiled by opposition groups such as the Free Russia Forum. Critics have accused him of propagating Kremlin‑aligned narratives and of espousing extremist views, including a 2015 incident in which he was labeled “Sexist of the Year” by The Moscow Times for advocating violence against women who used the term “sexism.”
Affiliations and honors
He is a member of the Union of Russian Writers (since March 2021) and has received a medal from the Double‑Headed Eagle Society in 2018. Kholmogorov remains active in Russian media, regularly contributing commentary on politics, history, and Orthodox Christianity.
