Yazhou District occupies the southwestern part of Sanya, bordering the South China Sea to the south and the districts of Tianya and Haitang to the east. Established as an administrative district in 2004, it covers an area of approximately 1,620 km². According to the 2020 national census, the district had a resident population of about 300 000 people. Infrastructure development has linked Yazhou to Sanya’s urban core via highways and the Hainan Ring Expressway.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Yazhou” combines the Chinese characters 崖 (yá), meaning “cliff” or “precipice,” and 州 (zhōu), an historic term for a prefecture or administrative region. The designation reflects the district’s coastal cliffs and its historical status as a prefectural seat during various dynastic periods.
Characteristics
- Geography and Climate: Situated in a tropical monsoon climate zone, Yazhou experiences warm temperatures year‑round, with average annual temperatures around 24 °C and abundant rainfall concentrated in the summer months. The coastline features a mixture of sandy beaches, rocky outcrops, and mangrove wetlands.
- Administration: The district is subdivided into several subdistricts, towns, and townships, each administered by a local government office under the jurisdiction of the Sanya municipal government.
