Definition:
Yau Tong station is a railway station located in Hong Kong, serving as part of the MTR (Mass Transit Railway) rapid transit system.
Overview:
Yau Tong station is situated in the southeastern part of Kowloon, within the Kwun Tong District. It is an underground station that serves as an interchange between the Tseung Kwan O line and the Kwun Tong line of the MTR network. The station serves the surrounding residential and industrial areas, including parts of Lam Tin and Yau Tong, and provides access to nearby housing estates, industrial buildings, and coastal developments. It began operations on August 4, 2002, as part of the Tseung Kwan O line extension.
Etymology/Origin:
The station is named after the Yau Tong area, a coastal locality in eastern Kowloon. The name "Yau Tong" (formerly romanized as "Yau Tung") is of Chinese origin, with corresponding characters 油塘, which literally translate to "oil pond" or "oil reservoir." This reflects the area’s historical association with oil storage facilities established during the 20th century.
Characteristics:
The station has an island platform configuration, allowing for cross-platform interchange between the two MTR lines under certain service patterns. It is located below ground and is integrated with adjacent developments, including public housing estates and commercial facilities. The station includes standard MTR amenities such as ticket gates, escalators, lifts, and signage in both Chinese and English.
