Yan Stastny (born July 30, 1982) is a Canadian‑born American former professional ice hockey forward. He played primarily as a left wing and is a member of the Stastny family of notable hockey players; he is the son of former NHL star Peter Stastny and the brother of former NHL players Paul Stastny and Adam Stastny.
Early life and education
Stastny was born in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, to Slovak‑born parents who had emigrated to North America. He grew up in the United States, attending the University of Denver where he played collegiate hockey for the Denver Pioneers. During his college career, he earned recognition as a reliable two‑way forward and was named to the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) All‑Academic Team.
Professional career
Draft and minor leagues
Stastny was selected 259th overall in the ninth round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins. He began his professional career in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Providence Bruins, where he developed his offensive skills and defensive responsibilities.
National Hockey League
Stastny made his NHL debut with the Boston Bruins during the 2005–06 season, appearing in 21 games and recording two assists. He subsequently signed with the New York Islanders for the 2006–07 season, playing 35 games and scoring his first NHL goal. He later joined the Edmonton Oilers organization, spending time with both the Oilers and their AHL affiliate, the Springfield Falcons.
Later career and retirement
Following his North American tenure, Stastny played in European leagues, including a stint with HC Bílí Tygři Liberec of the Czech Extraliga and with ERC Ingolstadt in Germany's Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL). He retired from professional hockey in 2015.

Stastny was noted for his skating ability, positional awareness, and versatility, able to contribute in both offensive and defensive situations. While not a high‑scoring player at the NHL level, he was valued for his work ethic and adaptability across multiple lines.
