Yafran District was a former administrative division (baladiyah) of the State of Libya, situated in the north‑western part of the country. Its administrative centre was the town of Yafran (also transliterated as Yefren or Iefren), which lies in the Nafusa (Jabal al‑Gharbi) Mountains.
Administrative history
The district was created as part of the 1998 reorganisation of Libya’s municipalities, which established a system of 26 baladiyat. Yafran District remained in existence until the nationwide administrative reform of 2007, when the number of districts was reduced and the territory of Yafran District was merged principally into the newly formed Jabal al‑Gharbi District.
Geography
Yafran District encompassed a largely mountainous and rural area of the Tripolitania region. The terrain consists of the western segment of the Nafusa range, characterised by limestone formations, seasonal streams, and semi‑arid plateau land. The district’s climate was typical of north‑western Libya, with mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers.
Demographics
Population figures for Yafran District were recorded in the 2006 national census; however, precise numbers are not readily available in the consulted sources. The district’s inhabitants were predominantly of Berber (Amazigh) origin, speaking the Nafusi dialect alongside Arabic.
Status
Following the 2007 administrative restructuring, Yafran District ceased to exist as a separate entity. Its former territory is now administered as part of Jabal al‑Gharbi District.
