Yachiho

Yachiho (八千穂) is a geographical name primarily associated with a region in Saku, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. It refers to:

  • Yachiho Highlands (八千穂高原): A scenic highland resort area located in the eastern part of Saku city, within the Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park. The highlands are renowned for their natural beauty, featuring extensive forests of Japanese larch, vibrant rhododendron blooms in season, and diverse alpine flora. It serves as a popular destination for various outdoor activities, including hiking, camping, and in winter, skiing at the Yachiho Kogen Ski Resort. The Yachiho Kogen Road is a prominent scenic driving route through the area.

  • Yachiho Station (八千穂駅): A railway station on the Koumi Line (小海線), operated by East Japan Railway Company (JR East). It serves the Yachiho area, facilitating access to the highlands and surrounding communities.

Historically, Yachiho was also the name of a former village (八千穂村, Yachiho-mura) located in Minamisaku District, Nagano Prefecture. This village existed until its merger in 2005 with the former town of Saku to form the expanded town of Sakuho. The current Sakuho town was thus formed from the consolidation of Yachiho and Saku.
