Description
Xylophanes guianensis is a species of hawk moth belonging to the family Sphingidae. Adults are medium‑large moths with a typical wingspan ranging from roughly 70 to 80 mm, though precise measurements vary among individuals. The forewings display a mottled brown‑gray ground colour with distinct, wavy transverse lines and a darker marginal band; the hindwings are generally lighter with a subtle discal spot. As with other members of the genus, the body is streamlined, facilitating rapid flight.
Distribution
The species is known from the Guianan region of northern South America. Confirmed records include French Guiana, Suriname, and adjacent areas of northern Brazil. Its presence has been documented in lowland tropical rainforest habitats within this range.
Biology and Ecology
Larval host plants for X. guianensis have not been exhaustively documented, but larvae of closely related Xylophanes species are typically associated with plants in the family Rubiaceae. Observations suggest that X. guianensis larvae may feed on species of the genus Psychotria or related rubiaceous vines, although definitive host records are lacking. Adults are nocturnal and are attracted to light; they are presumed to nectar at night, visiting a variety of flowering plants, as is typical for sphingids.
Conservation Status
There is currently no specific conservation assessment for Xylophanes guianensis in the IUCN Red List. The species does not appear to be under immediate threat, but habitat loss in the Amazonian basin could potentially impact local populations.
