Description
Xerocrassa subrogata is a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusk, commonly referred to as a land snail. Like other members of the genus Xerocrassa, it possesses a helicoid shell that is typically small to medium in size, with a relatively thin, translucent to opaque calcareous wall. The shell surface often exhibits fine growth lines and may display subtle coloration patterns ranging from pale whitish‑brown to light tan. Detailed morphological characteristics such as the exact number of whorls, aperture shape, and internal anatomy are documented in specialized malacological literature but are not provided here.
Distribution and Habitat
Published records indicate that Xerocrassa subrogata occurs in the Mediterranean region, with confirmed occurrences on certain islands of the Balearic archipelago (Spain). The species inhabits xeric (dry) environments, typically favoring limestone outcrops, rocky slopes, and shrubland where it can find shelter under stones, leaf litter, and crevices. It is adapted to tolerate the seasonal aridity characteristic of its native habitats.
Ecology
As a land snail, X. subrogata is a detritivore, feeding on decaying plant material, algae, and fungal spores. Its activity is largely nocturnal or crepuscular to avoid desiccation during the hot, dry daytime periods. Reproduction is hermaphroditic, with individuals possessing both male and female reproductive organs; mating and egg‑laying occur during the more humid seasons.
Conservation Status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has not evaluated Xerocrassa subrogata separately; consequently, its global conservation status is currently listed as “Data Deficient.” Local assessments suggest that the species does not face immediate threats beyond habitat modification and urban development on its limited island range, but comprehensive population studies are lacking.
